Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 2248
1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar. 6 over 5. PCGS graded AU-53. High in the condition census for this variety, this lovely example will please most collectors for the lilac gray tones and luster in the protected areas. Further, the hair on Liberty is well struck, and this would appear to be an early die state (prior to lapping) which shows minor clash marks on both sides, and a thin die crack through the N of UNITED, down the diagonal into the field above the arrow points. Extensive die rust is present around the obverse periphery. One small speck below the end of the branch shows light pin scratching, visible only with a strong glass. Certainly a very important coin for the specialist, and worthy of a strong bid for it color and surfaces.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 1,800.

Lot 2251
1810 Capped Bust Half Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Gorgeous lilac gray toning over lustrous fields on both sides of this specimen. As always seen, the devices are weak at the centers around Liberty's chin and on the left wing of the eagle. Both sides have a peripheral die crack, and we note tiny marks between the TA of STATES. Clean on the face of Liberty, and very choice for the grade. These early dates are seldom offered this nice, and we note that PCGS has graded 13 this high, with only 6 graded higher, all MS-64 of the date! An opportunity.
Estimated Value $2,250 - 2,750.

Lot 2252
1811 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Small 8. NGC graded AU-58. A scarce variety which is seldom offered in high grade, this pleasing AU-58 boasts ample luster and desirable golden lilac toning on both sides. Minor handling ticks expected for the grade, but none worthy of particular mention. Sharply struck on all but a couple of the upper left stars, and a later die state with encircling cracks on the reverse. Although there are a couple of mint state coins known, recent auction appearances quickly drop to EF and below grades for this variety. An impressive coin for the grade, and worth a strong bid.
Estimated Value $500 - 600.

Lot 2253
1812 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 2 over 1, small 8. PCGS graded MS-64. Magnificent deep steel blue toning on both sides, with areas of lighter gold near the edge. Well struck for this early series, with problem free devices and fields. A few minor hairlines can be seen as always, and there is a small irregular toned area behind Liberty's head on the ninth star. Fiery luster comes alive when examined under a light. PCGS has only graded 6 this high, with a single coin graded higher of the small 8 variety.
Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.

1812 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Normal date. ICG graded MS-67. Full cartwheel luster on this early Bust Half dollar, with light steel gray color throughout. The dies show many light cracks on the obverse and clash marks as well. As expected, the surfaces are nearly perfect and show few signs of handling keeping this coin at the high end of the gem class, quite a miracle for a coin that's 190 years old! Certainly one of the very finest known of the date and variety, and worthy of a strong bid for the outstanding quality it possesses.

1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Normal. NGC graded MS-67. An exceptionally beautiful coin because of the majestic blue and gold toning on both sides. Of course the surfaces are nearly perfect, with only trace signs of handling visible with a strong glass. Both the obverse and reverse periphery are deeply toned with royal bright blue which fades to dark gold at the inner star points. Blazing luster beneath the toning and the strike is also sharp. There is a curious die line connecting the top left eagle's wing to the motto ribbon above, and the dies show light multiple clash marks, as usual for the variety. NGC has graded only 4 coins of this date as such, with none graded higher, making this one tied for the finest known.

Lot 2257
1815 Capped Bust Half Dollar. 5 over 2. AU-50. A rare date in high grade, but this one has been cleaned and retoned with mottled irregular areas around the obverse periphery, while the reverse remains a more pleasing russet gray with blue highlights on the devices. As is normal for this date, both dies show strong and multiple clash marks. Examination will find decent surfaces, although we note some trivial faint marks in the obverse fields. Importantly, the obverse curls are well struck and the devices show virtually no wear from circulation. All in all, a very presentable example of this highly coveted date which boasts a low mintage of 47,150.

1853 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Arrows and rays. NGC graded MS-65. An extremely difficult type coin to locate in full gem grades, the arrows and rays combination was used for just a part of 1853. This particular example shows glowing sunset colors on both the obverse and reverse with a natural gray tone elsewhere. Sharply impressed by the dies, with full stars and details on Liberty. We note the reverse die shows clash marks both below and above the eagle's wings. NGC has graded only 16 this high, and 7 higher (all MS-66), while PCGS has graded only 14 this high and 3 higher. 1854-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-66. Certainly one of the very finest of this scarce type coin to be graded, and with wondrous eye appeal from the sea green, blue and gold toning on both sides. Fully struck by the dies, and nearly perfect in every way. One tiny tick in the field near Liberty's knee will help trace this one, as will a couple of minor irregularities in the toning just under the date. PCGS has graded 11 this high with a single coin graded a notch higher, making this one of the very finest to survive of the with arrows type. Certain to be the centerpiece of a superb type or date collection. If you love lustrous, magnificently toned coins, then feast your eyes on this one.

1855 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-65. Pryor Collection on holder. Exceptional quality for the date and type. Fiery luster in the fields which is enhanced by stunning deep blue and green toning at the periphery of both the obverse and reverse, the centers more gold to white in color. Fully struck save for the very last star, which shows central weakness only. This must be an early die state as we note a faint crack from stars five to seven, and hints of another at the top of UNIT. Clashed with outlines of the eagle's wings up from Liberty's right and left arm and the reverse too, with clash marks both above and below the wings. As to rarity, this is a good one, PCGS has graded 5 this high, with none higher, making this one of the very finest of the date. An opportunity for the astute numismatist.
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

Lot 2275
1856 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 65 Premium Quality. The Garrett/Pryor coin. First off, the mintage of 1856 proof half dollars is very low, perhaps 25 pieces were struck although mintages of proofs weren't recorded with the same precision as in later years. This particular one is not only a gem, but also has a fantastic pedigree. Further, it is toned with magnificent blue and gold toning on both sides, which greatly adds to the visual appeal. As noted in Breen's Proof Encyclopedia, the reverse die shows "top of first red stripe hollow" which may be a different reverse die from other known proofs, which this coin clearly shows. We also note some die lines below the 1 in the date. Proofs were struck from specially polished dies, which were first dipped in a light acid which etched the surfaces slightly (creating the "frost" on the devices), then the fields were polished to a mirror smoothness. Coins were then struck with the prepared new dies, and sold to collectors or dignitaries as requested.
As to the number graded, NGC has graded 2 this high, with 1 graded higher (PF-66), and two others higher as PF-67 Cameo, and PCGS has only graded 1 example as high as PR-65. Hence, this is certainly one of the very finest known of this extremely rare coin. This particular one is identifiable by a tiny speck below her foot in the field right of the date, and is currently in NGC holder #348899-001.
Estimated Value $12,500 - 15,000.
